How YourKey can help
YourKey can help you after any accident – whether it is a motor accident, accident at work, accident in a public place, or something else. We offer free accident advice, management and support to anyone who has been involved in an accident.
YourKey offers independent help, support and a range of free services after an accident. This includes liaising with insurance companies, arranging replacement vehicles, repairs and providing legal advice and support with a view to recovering compensation.
Nothing – it’s free to join YourKey and if you have an accident where someone else was to blame then our after-accident services are free too!
Instead of charging our members directly, we receive commission on the services we arrange for you – for example, vehicle recovery, repair and replacement vehicles. Your insurance company also receives commission if they arrange these services but by allowing YourKey to handle things, you benefit from free independent advice and support (and hopefully a better service, too!).
The only time where YourKey might charge you anything is if you ask us to handle an accident that was your fault. Our services were designed to help people after an accident where someone else was to blame, but we’re happy to help you after any accident.
Yes, if the accident was caused by someone else who has their own insurance.
‘Uninsured losses’ are expenses from an accident that aren’t covered by your own insurance policy. For example:
|What is covered||Uninsured losses|
|Third party insurance||Any damage you cause to a third party (e.g. the other driver’s car)||All your own costs relating to the accident|
|Fully comprehensive insurance||Your vehicle (minus any excess you have to pay)||All your other expenses, depending on your policy (e.g. if your policy doesn’t include a courtesy car then you will have to pay for one)|
If someone else was to blame for the accident then in theory, your uninsured losses can be reclaimed from the insurance company of the person at fault. In practice, this can be very difficult – this is where YourKey come in!
If you call us first after an accident, we’ll recover all your losses from the other person’s insurance company. If you have already repaired or replaced your vehicle from your own insurance company then it may be too late to reclaim your losses.
Being involved in an accident at all – whether or not it was your fault – does have an effect on your insurance record. This means that you’re likely to have to declare it when you apply for insurance in future, and your premiums may be higher.
However, making a claim on your own insurance has an even worse effect on your insurance record. Phoning your own insurer first after an accident means that you’re likely to end up claiming on your own insurance. This is silly if the accident wasn’t your fault, as the person at fault should be paying for everything through their own insurance company.
Always phone YourKey first after an accident that wasn’t your fault. We’ll make sure that you only claim on your own insurance if you really have to. This will minimise the effect on your insurance record.
It’s easy and free to join YourKey, and anyone can join. Simply complete a few details and you will receive an email asking you to confirm your membership. It only takes a couple of minutes.
Once you have joined YourKey for free, we’ll provide free after-accident advice and support to you and your family. We can also help passengers and anyone else who was involved in the accident with you.
Don’t worry, we’re happy to replace it – and send cards for the rest of your family, too! Please give us a call on 08000 114 114 or 0330 0225210, or request more key cards online.
Save our number under ‘Accident’ on your mobile phone, just in case you ever lose your key card. This means you’ll always have our details handy if you have an accident.
Once a member of YourKey, always a member of YourKey. There’s no need to renew and your membership will continue indefinitely.
We need your up to date contact details, please send us a message via our contact page if these change.
You don’t need to tell us if you change your vehicle, as YourKey membership is for you (and your family) and is not specific to your vehicle. Don’t forget, YourKey can help you after any type of accident – not just a car or motor accident.
YourKey and your insurance policy
No. In fact, most people believe that legal insurance* covers a lot more than it actually does.
Legal expenses insurance is a very specific type of policy – usually sold as an add-on to your car insurance.
Most policies (in fact all the ones we have seen) are specifically designed to pay your legal fees if you make a compensation claim that is not successful. Even more specifically, they will only pay out if you can tick all these boxes:
- You are making a claim against the person who caused the accident (i.e. the accident wasn’t your fault)
- Your case has a good chance of success (i.e. you’re likely to win, in which case the other party will have to pay your fees anyway!)
- You have an injury worth at least £1,000 OR you have suffered financial losses of at least £10,000 in England and Wales (£3,000 in Scotland and Northern Ireland)
You obviously don’t want to have to pay legal costs if you lose – but if your legal insurance only covers cases where you’re likely to win then you’re not really getting much for your money. Read your policy’s small print (or ask us to) – you might be surprised at how little it covers!
If you’ve been injured in an accident, phone YourKey instead of relying on legal insurance. We’ll talk you through the options:
- If you have a good case – We’ll help you find a reputable no-win-no-fee solicitor who is happy to take on your case.
- If your injuries are less then £1,000 or your financial losses are less than £10,000 – We’ll suggest alternative options, such as getting your expenses paid by the insurance company of the person at fault.
* We’re referring to the legal insurance that is commonly sold with motor vehicle insurance and only relates to compensation for injury in a road accident. YourKey’s services do not replace the broader type of legal expenses insurance that covers other legal issues, which you may wish to buy separately.
No, although a lot of people think it does!
You might be able to recover your uninsured losses as part of your compensation case. However, your legal expenses insurance will only pay your legal fees (in very specific circumstances – see above!) and not your other losses.
Yes, YourKey deals with accidents and not breakdown. Buy a good breakdown policy, and keep the details with YourKey’s phone number. This means that you’ll know what to do whether you break down or have an accident.
Yes, if the accident was caused by someone else who has their own insurance.
Most insurance policies include an ‘excess’ that you have to pay whenever you make a claim. For example, if you have a car accident and claim on your insurance then you may have to pay an excess of anything between £50 and £500+. The insurance company will then pay for losses over and above the excess.
Most people automatically think to phone their insurance company straight after an accident. If you phone YourKey first, we’ll get the person at fault to pay for everything so that you don’t have to claim on your own insurance. If you’re not making a claim, you don’t have to pay any excess!
What to do after an accident
Before you make any phone calls, you need to decide who was to blame for the accident.
- If you were to blame – Phoning your own insurance company is the right thing to do as you will need to make a claim, if you choose to do so. You’re welcome to phone YourKey for independent advice first, but if the accident is your fault then we’ll probably advise you to call your insurer.
- If someone else was to blame – Phone YourKey first, NOT your own insurance company. If you phone your own insurer then you’ll probably end up making a claim and losing out financially. We can make sure this doesn’t happen.
- If you’re not sure who was to blame – Phone YourKey first to get independent advice and talk through the options. Don’t phone your insurance company first unless you’re certain the accident was your fault and you need to make a claim on your policy.
Yes. If you’ve had an accident and someone else was to blame, please phone us first whether or not you’re a YourKey member. You can join for free over the phone and start receiving our free after-accident services straight away.
Because if the accident wasn’t your fault then you may be left out of pocket.
If you phone your insurance company first, you will probably end up making a claim on your own insurance. This means that you’ll have to pay your policy excess, lose your no claims bonus and your insurance premiums will probably increase.
If the accident was your fault then it’s fine to phone your insurance company first, as you will need to make a claim. You’re very welcome to phone YourKey first to make sure you’re not missing anything, but we will probably advise you to contact your insurer.
If you phone your insurer first, you will usually end up making a claim on your own insurance – regardless of whether the accident was your fault. They’re not obliged to tell you if you’d be better off claiming from the person at fault instead.
A lot of people are surprised to hear that their insurance company doesn’t have to act in their interests. However, your insurer is not your representative. They have agreed to pay out in certain circumstances – their job is to follow the wording of your policy.
If you call to tell them about an accident, they will take you through their claims process. If you don’t know better (i.e. if you’re not a YourKey member!), you’ll probably end up making a claim. If the accident wasn’t your fault, this means you’ll have to pay your insurance excess, lose your No Claims Bonus and be unable to recover your other losses.
On the other hand, if you phone YourKey first then this is exactly what we will do. Our independent experts will assess whether someone else is to blame. If so, we will claim the expenses and losses from their insurance company instead of yours – saving you a great deal of unnecessary hassle and financial loss.
More than likely not. Insurance companies like to keep admin costs to a minimum. They may not bother chasing the other insurer for their outlay and even if they do they will not include the excess you have paid. This will leave you with a bigger black mark on your insurance record, and you won’t be able to get your excess back.
Phone YourKey first after and accident. We’ll sort everything out and reclaim your losses from the other insurance company.
Yes, but you should call YourKey first and not your insurance company. This is because although you need to tell your insurance company you have been in an accident (and we can do this for you), calling them first is likely to trigger their claims process.
If the accident wasn’t your fault then you shouldn’t have to make a claim on your on insurance. The insurance company of the person at fault should pay for your losses.
Phone YourKey first after an accident and we’ll make sure the right person pays for everything. We’ll notify your insurance company, while making sure you don’t make an unnecessary claim.
