Around Cambridge there are some nice rides. I expect every area has. The Gransdens,Toft, Hardwick, and Bourn to name a few are nice rides.
My favourite ride from East London is to head up to Finchingfield for a pub lunch on the village green, passing Little Dunmow on the way. This takes you through the best of the Essex countryside and avoids major arteries like the A10, M25 and M11, all of which are fine for speed but nothing else.
Finchingfield should probably win the Village of the Year award most years – it’s idyllic, with a windmill, village pond, weir, old church, good pub, nice green and loads of horses and good parking for bikes.
Good short ride in Northants/Cambs is the B660 up from the A14 at Molesworth/Catworth Fox turn, all the way through to Ramsey St Mary, lots of twisties and a couple of turns that tighten up quite nicely to give you a bit of a thrill, few villages along the way but can be ridden quite swiftly otherwise, and its quiet!.
Another good ride is the road from Mkt Harborough to Melton Mowbray, hills twists and turns and some good scenery. The only downside is the policing, as it is a popular run on a Sunday. There is a good cafe in Melton at the bus station, small, busy but biker friendly.
Living in Devon there are some fantastic rides within a day out, from straightworward and scenic to notorious and scenic. Here’s a scenic but extremely challenging (well I thought so) one for you.
Porlock hill. From Minehead on the A39 through Porlock, Lynmouth and across Exmoor. Going up from Porlock there is a choice of the 1 in 4 climb with severe hairpin bends (known as Porlock Hill) or the more gentle toll road with a 1 in 14. Coming across this raod without any prior preparation (or warning) we chose the 1 in 4 – All I can say is it tests your riding skills to the limit – watch out for the worst of the hairpins, not enough revs and you’ll fall over into the bank – too fast and you’ll be on the wrong side of the road. Get it right and you’ll feel proud as punch!! The route is spectacular – taking you across the top of Exmoor with viiews across the moors to one side and out to sea the other, as well as up and down and round and round some serious challenges.
This is such a notorious road so check out links on YouTube. Note that we came across this road without knowing anything about it! Better to be prepared.
Enjoy! Anyone else done this route?
I’d have put a photo in with my great ride, but wasn’t sure how to?
