Christine’s uninsured loss

January 23rd, 2012

Christine was driving her car to catch a ferry to France when an accident happened. Thankfully there was no injury.

The accident was caused by the driver of the car behind.

Christine did what many people do almost automatically; she called her own insurance company. She had comprehensive insurance cover, so her damaged car was recovered and taken off for repair. Her policy did not include a replacement vehicle so she borrowed a friend’s car, paid for insurance, and after a night in a hotel set off for the ferry again.

Calling her insurance company first meant:

1. Car recovered and repaired.

2. Christine paid her insurance excess of £600.

3. Christine paid for a hotel.

4. Christine paid insurance on the borrowed car.

5. Christine would like to pay the friend for the miles put on his car.

6. Her insurance record is now worse as payment of claims is what counts, not fault.

Out of pocket is the result.

So what would have been the result had she called Your Key first?:

1. Damaged car recovered and repaired.

2. Replacement vehicle provided.

3. Might just have caught the ferry.

4. Insurance record preserved.

Not out of pocket with Your Key, with one exception, as the bills are presented direct to the insurance company of the driver at fault. The exception is Christine would have paid for recovery on her credit card and the sum would be recovered along with everything else.
