breakdown insurance

September 12th, 2008

Breakdown insurance covers a variety of vehicles, including cars, vans and motorbikes, and typically provides services such motorcyle breakdownas roadside assistance, loan vehicles/alternative transport for where you need to go, and can help pay for or subsidise overnight accommodation near the vicinity of your breakdown or your intended destination. Basic roadside assistance will usually take place anywhere on the road in the UK outside a quarter mile radius of your home - additional cover providing support and assistance should you break down on your driveway can usually be added to a policy for a small additional fee.
Breakdown insurance is typically split into two different policies providing either vehicle cover or driver cover. Vehicle cover protects the vehicle itself as opposed to the driver, so repairs can be made regardless of who was at the wheel in the event of an accident. Personal cover is useful for drivers with multiple vehicles - if for example, you drive a van for work and a car for personal journeys, then a personal cover plan will ensure you for any of your vehicles which you are driving.

Your Key recommends you buy breakdown insurance. Your Key is an accident support service, not breakdown, so breakdown cover is important. Do weigh up the options taking account of your vehicles and likely drivers. Do not just take images-broken-down-car.jpegthe vehicle insurer’s offer as that may not cover you, your vehicles, and the likely drivers.

Most of us have more than one vehicle. I want a package which covers breakdown for the vehicle I am using. I only ride one at a time, so I am fed up of paying for each vehicle.
Would be good if you can point me in the right direction. Thanks. Mack

  2. Your Key team Says:

The Your Key team has been investigating the cost of breakdown cover. It looks to us like many members renew their existing package each year by direct debit. This has its dangers, as you do not spot the increasing cost.
We have found two alternatives which are really worth a look.
Auto Aid is low cost although could mean some hassle. You pay a low annual fee, call if you need help, and the services you need are provided. You pay for the services then claim them back. Low cost but not easy. See the deal at http://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/
Next is Auto National who reward those who do not need help with a no claims bonus. If you have new well maintained vehicles this might be the service for you. Follow the link, take a quote and please let us know what you think.

NCI is a much better buy

  4. Doug Mullin Says:

For those of us that have and use multiple vehicles, including both cars and bikes, Auto Aid is the best product I have found after some quite extensive searching. This covers myself and my partner for any vehicle we are using and, although you have to pay ‘up front’ for any assistance provided, this spend is reclaimable under the policy. Many thanks to Your Key for finding and recommending this!

i`ve been with autoaid for four years now, and wouldnt change. it covers whatever my wife or myself are driving or riding instead of having seperate cover for each vehicle, and its cheap!

  6. George D Says:

I have a car and a bike and have just signed up with Autoaid. They are pretty much the same as Autorescue I think as they are in the same place and are covered by the same Underwriters etc. Much cheaper though and it covers anything that me or my wife drive. The only difference is that you pay up front if you have a problem and claim it back. Eat yer heart out Meercats. Simples eh!!

  7. Julian Andrews Says:

I have Auto Aid and fortunately haven’t had to use it. Why pay 100’s per year for something you may never use when you can pay

  8. Bob Trevena Says:

I’ve been using auto aid for at least three years and as others have said, it’s inexpensive. I’m covered while out on my bike and my wife is covered as well if she’s using the car.

  9. Bob Van Says:

Some excellent thoughts. There’s a few things one can change to reduce your van insurance premium; easy things like improving security. People always look around for the cheapest van insurance estimate. Actually if one did simple stuff to make you less risky, you would maybe save just as much cash.
