I was just about to insure my wife’s car and include legal cover. I remembered something about Your Key protecting my family, so I checked. I don’t need to buy legal cover on family policies again. That’s a great saving every year, thanks.

Could you let me know if this is 100% genuine? As I have not made any payments for this policy I am obviously a little suspicious that I seem to be getting a legal policy for nothing!
Can you explain???

Good question, thank you David. It is a shame, but something free can raise suspicion. The short answer is that you have a genuine legal expenses insurance policy because we have paid the premium. It is part of a comprehensive service unlike the one off policies insurance companies sell. It is not specific to a vehicle, so you are covered for any accident, and it covers your partner, spouse, children up to the age of 21, and vehicle passengers and pillions. And we will renew membership and cover each year without cost or admin. Our membership and insurance is free. We hold no bank or credit card details. We arrange services after accidents such as recovery, hire and repair. Who pays for those services depends on who is to blame for the accident. We earn commission from those services. We do not add to the cost, we simply bring together everything you need through a freephone number.Do have a look at our questions page by using the menu on the left of the page.

I just wanted to check how long my membership and the insurance lasts.

Hi Darren.
Membership and the legal cover from Your Key are renewed each year without any formality or cost. Just keep our number on your phone under accident - 08000 114 114 - and remember there is no need to buy legal cover on any vehicle you insure in the future. We cover any accident, so cover is not limited to one vehicle.
Our cover includes your family so covers your spouse/partner, and children living at home up to the age of 21 years. They do not need to buy legal cover on their vehicles as Your Key covers them too.
Do remember we are accident support, and not breakdown, so use the saving to buy breakdown cover.
If your details change please make sure you keep us up to date by using the change details facility on this site.

I was obtaining bike insurance for my husband and recieved an email to state we had free legal cover sounds too good to be true as you never get something for free. We had to use Legal cover when he was knocked off his bike over 5 years ago now and it was well worth the money. Are you sure it is free as we may take out an insurance policy elsewhere and I want to make sure he is covered should the unthinkable happen.

Hi Anita, thanks for your question.
The greatest challenge for us when explaining our offering is that the accident legal expenses insurance is free. It is free this year, and we will renew it free in the future. All you have to do is make sure you tell us if your contact details change.
Legal cover is usually sold by insurers and brokers when a vehicle is insured, and the legal cover is limited to that vehicle. Many bikers have at least one car, so they buy two at least two policies. Our one policy covers any accident to our member and family, so you do not need to buy any policies at all.
Legal cover is sold as an optional extra, as the basic insurance quote has to be as low as possible so the insurer can compete on the comparative web sites. Then you go through to arrange your policy you are presented with a menu of add ons.
If an accident occurs and services such as hire and repair are provided, there are commissions to be earned, as in the referral of most business these days. Rather than sell the insurance and take the commissions, we give you the policy free, we provide a free help line, and if services are arranged we earn our commission. We think ours is a fair business model.
So yes, the insurance policy is free, and it means you need not buy accident legal cover again.

Thank you for your prompt response, I will not need to take our this type of policy on my car or my husbands buggy then as stated this policy will
cover all three vehicles, absolutely brilliant.
Kind regards
Anita

Hi what does 50/50 mean in insurance what happens to repairs of vehicles and personal injury
Thanks Nic
50/50 is the terminology used to show that each party involved in an accident accepts half of the blame. So each party will recover half of their losses. The value of your claim is calculated, and you get half.
The legal principle is called contributory negligence. It means I might be to blame for an accident, but you might be partially to blame. So in simple terms, I did not see you, but you should not have been travelling so fast. That is the usual accusation thrown at a bike rider. Your partial fault will be assesses at a percentage figure, and lets say 30%. You only receive 70% of the value of your claim, and I am entitled to claim 30% of he value of my claim.
A collision in a narrow line is a good example, particularly when both vehicles are still moving at the time of the collision.
Do make sure you get good advice before accepting partial fault. Not only will it reduce the value of your claim, it will mean your own insurer will have to pay up, and that means increased insurance premiums.
There is no magic to the assessment as anyone using common sense can make a worthwhile judgment. But when you are involved in an accident it is difficult to accept you might have contributed in some way. You have to step back and be objective.
